Pomegranates, Organic and Biodynamic OUT OF SEASON

Season: September through December
10-pound box $30

We grow two types of pomegranates at Beck Grove. Early Wonder red pomegranates and Israeli pink pomegranates. The pomegranate originated in the region of modern-day Iran and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region and northern India. It was introduced into Spanish America in the late 16th century and California by Spanish settlers in 1769.

The edible pomegranate fruit is round, about the size of an orange or grapefruit in diameter with thick, reddish skin. To open a pomegranate, first score it with a knife and break it open to reveal the seeds and white pulp membranes. The entire seed, also called aril, is consumed raw. The number of seeds in a pomegranate can vary from 200 to about 1400.

Pomegranates seeds and juice are used in cooking, baking, garnishes, juice blends, smoothies and alcoholic beverages. Pomegranate juice can be sweet or sour, with sour notes from the acidic tannins.

A 100 gram serving of pomegranate seeds provides 12% of the Daily Value (DV) for vitamin C, 16% DV for vitamin K and 10% DV for folate. Pomegranate seeds are an excellent source of dietary fiber (20% DV) which is entirely contained in the edible seeds.
